Henry Livingston, Sr. was born in Kingston, the second child of Gilbert Livingston and Cornelia Beekman. He moved to Poughkeepsie before 1740 and rented a house from Captain John Jan Conklin. It wasn't long before Henry realized that he wanted more from Captain Conklin than a place to live. In 1741, young Harry Livingston rode up on his horse while Sunday services were going on, and scooped up Susannah Conklin, Captain Conklin's young daughter. They rode down the road and became man and wife, against the wishes of both sets of parents. But once Susannah's first child was almost born, the Conklins must have decided that they were stuck with young Harry, as they sold him the house in which the couple lived.
