James Livingston to Hamilton Fish

When famous descendants of Robert Livingston's son Gilbert are named, it's common to note only Dutchess County Sheriff James Livingston and Henry's minister brother, Rev. John Henry Livingston. That's because historians take the lazy approach and let genealogists do much of the work connecting ancestors and descendants. And genealogists, too often, are pretty blatantly sexist. Read a family book, and they'll follow forever the sons of sons of sons. But just let someone have a daughter who changes their name, and it's as though the genes had stopped dead cold.

But because we have no sexists here, I'm sure we're just as happy to note the many famous descendants of Gilbert Livingston.
